When do you need a canopy construction drawing?
A canopy or veranda turns the terrace or garden into a sheltered outdoor space that is also usable in rainy months. For the municipality, a canopy is still a structure, and for larger constructions, closed roofs or visibility from the public road, an environmental permit is required. An accurate construction drawing shows how the canopy fits on the plot and connects to the home.
Common situations where a canopy drawing is needed:
- A terrace canopy against the rear facade with a polycarbonate or glass roof.
- A free-standing canopy for an outdoor kitchen or seating area in the garden.
- A veranda partly closed off with (glass) walls or sliding doors.
- A large canopy several metres deep, falling outside the rules for permit-free building.
What does a canopy construction drawing include?
A complete canopy construction drawing consists of a floor plan, facade views of all visible sides, cross-sections through the roof structure and columns, and a site plan. The floor plan shows the position of the columns or posts, the span and the roof surface. Facade views show the canopy from the garden and the neighbours, with materials and heights.
A cross-section shows the roof pitch or slope, the height of the structure and the connection between columns, beams and roof. On the site plan, the canopy is shown on the plot, with distances to the property boundary and the public space. For canopies against the home, we work out an additional detail for the connection to the existing facade.
Permits and permit-free building
A canopy at the rear of the home can be placed permit-free under strict conditions, in accordance with the Buildings (Living Environment) Decree. The rules apply to maximum surface area, height and distance to the property boundary. For larger canopies, canopies in the side garden or visibility from the public road, an environmental permit is needed.
Important: a canopy is by definition open. As soon as you place three or four walls, it structurally becomes a closed outbuilding such as a garden house or veranda, with different rules and possibly stricter aesthetic supervision. Unsure about the status of your design? At the intake, we look at what qualifies in your case and which rules apply.
What does a canopy construction drawing cost?
The price of a canopy construction drawing depends on the size and complexity. For a simple rectangular terrace canopy, the drawing work is limited. For a veranda with (glass) walls, a combination with an outdoor kitchen or a large canopy surface, the drawing work increases further. Request a quote for an exact price based on your situation.
For large spans or the addition of solar panels on the canopy roof, an additional structural calculation may be needed. We coordinate this so that the drawing and the calculation align and the permit file is complete in one go.
Difference between a canopy and a veranda
A canopy is usually an open structure: columns or posts carry a roof without there being any walls. A veranda is a canopy that is partly or entirely closed off with (glass) walls or sliding doors, usually against the home. A veranda therefore has more characteristics of a building and can be treated as an outbuilding in some municipalities, with different permit rules.
The difference partly determines the aesthetic assessment and any requirements around insulation or fire safety. If you want an outdoor space with more comfort and protection, a veranda is the obvious choice. For those who only want shade or protection from rain, an open canopy is often sufficient and cheaper.
