When do you need a carport construction drawing?
A carport is a popular alternative to a closed garage: an open canopy that protects your car, bikes or garden furniture from rain, snow and intense sun, without you placing a full building. For the municipality it remains a structure, and in many cases an environmental permit is required, especially when the carport is visible from the public road or comes close to the property boundary. A construction drawing shows how the carport fits on the plot and with the home.
Common situations where a carport drawing is needed:
- A carport against the side facade of the home on the driveway.
- A free-standing carport in the rear garden or next to the garage.
- A combination of carport and storage under one roof.
- A carport with solar panels or a charging point for an electric car.
What does a carport construction drawing include?
A complete carport construction drawing contains a floor plan with the position of the columns or posts, the span and the roof surface. Facade views show the side and front of the carport, including dimensions, materials and the colour of the posts and roof panels. A cross-section shows the roof pitch, any slope for water drainage and the height of the structure.
On the site plan, the carport is shown on the plot, with distance to the property boundary, home and public road. For a carport against the home, the connection to the existing facade is worked out as a detail, including lead flashing and rainwater drainage. For combinations with solar panels or a charging point, we note the associated provisions on the drawing.
Permits and permit-free building
A carport can be placed permit-free under strict conditions in the rear-garden area. The national rules for permit-free building, laid down in the Buildings (Living Environment) Decree, apply to the surface area, height and distance to the property boundary. For a carport in the side garden or where it is visible from the public road, an environmental permit is required in almost all cases and the design is assessed by the aesthetic (welstand) committee.
Your municipality's zoning plan additionally determines what is permitted in your situation. On a corner plot or with a single-family home with a large driveway, different rules apply than in a new-build neighbourhood with strict aesthetic rules. A construction drawing with the right dimensions and line thickness ensures the municipality immediately has all the information needed to assess it.
What does a carport construction drawing cost?
A carport construction drawing is available from €325 including VAT. The final price depends on the dimensions, the chosen material and whether the carport is free-standing or connects to an existing building. A carport against the home requires extra detailing on the connection, whereas a free-standing carport with standard dimensions can be drawn faster.
For larger or structurally complex carports, an additional calculation from a structural engineer may be needed, especially if solar panels or a load-bearing upper deck are added. The municipal permit fees are then added on top of that.
Difference between a carport and a garage
The main difference between a carport and a garage is the degree of enclosure. A carport is open: columns or posts carry a roof, but there are no walls. A garage is an enclosed building with walls and a door, giving you extra storage space and burglary prevention. Carports are cheaper, faster to install and require less maintenance, but offer less protection than a garage.
An in-between form is a veranda or semi-open canopy, sometimes combined with storage. The choice depends on budget, use and what is permitted in your street in terms of aesthetic requirements. A good drawing makes this choice tangible and prevents surprises during the application.
